Quarry Pool

Tenino Quarry Pool

Located at 319 Park Avenue West, at Tenino City Park

There’s nothing else like this anywhere! The Quarry Pool was originally a working sandstone quarry in the late 1800's and is now a low-cost, family-friendly recreation spot for all to enjoy. The Quarry is an all-natural lake including aquatic life and aquatic plants.

The Spray Park and Wading pool are chlorinated. The wading pool is 2' deep and is accessible by a ramp.

FAQs

  • Yes, you can bring snacks, coolers, chairs, shade, etc.  however, space may be limited.
  • Entrance into the Quarry Pool is "first come, first serve."
  • Swim Test is for persons under 18:  The swim test is for strong swimmers only.  No doggy paddle allowed.  If you do not feel confident that you or your child can pass the test, then DO NOT TAKE THE TEST.  The swim test area is 35 feet deep, and the quarry deeper, therefore this area is not for learners.
    • The Test:  Jump into the Quarry feet first, level off and swim with a strong stroke for 25' then turn around and swim back then demonstrate that you can either float or tread water.

The Legend

Legend has it that quarrymen struck a spring that quickly filled the pit with water. As the water flooded the area, the workmen had to abandon their equipment and machinery. To this day, tools and heavy machinery still sit at the bottom of the site.  In 2017, Mayor Wayne Fournier organized an exploratory dive and discovered that the water is so cold and still beyond the depth of 20 feet that visibility is near zero.  However, the divers were able to touch bottom and locate some abandoned equipment by feel.  Please visit the Thurston Talk website for a short article on the dive.
